A Jury of Your Grandchildren – Part 2
By Dr. Richard Jones

Continued from Part 1, Posted October 26, 2004

The Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. 1832. (By John Martin, 1789-1854)

BLAST FROM THE PAST

The following scene leads to a final question. Much rides upon your answer.

Suddenly, one day in 2004, as you continue to experience the prevailing discouraging psychological factors around you, both of your now deceased Christian grandfathers – and their fathers, too – magically appear before you, live and in the flesh. Yes, there’s much rejoicing, but since their return a couple of days ago and subsequent nationwide inspection tour, it has been the catastrophic cultural decay and moral chaos engulfing the nation that has truly shocked them. Though very impressed with the many technological wonders all about, the degree to which the country has deteriorated since their day has triggered a disbelief with which you, a bit shamefacedly, are forced to agree.

But you persevere, assuring your granddads that they are not alone in their assessment. Even many not-yet-deceased Americans agree, including the well known justice, Robert Bork, who recently summed up the frustrations of many Christians in his important (though minimally read) book, Slouching Toward Gomorrah.1 However, on reviewing the book’s arguments, all four granddads quickly dismiss its time dimension, insisting that the United States’ “slouch” to moral anarchy is so far advanced that Americans would need to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah were the two cultures to be compared side by side...
